History of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish:
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish has been bequeathed a legacy of faith and service by our earlier parishioners whose generosity and fundraising built strong foundations for a family oriented Parish. We celebrated our golden jubilee as a Parish in July 2001 as this area, originally under the auspices of Holy Name Parish, was declared the Parish of Toowoomba West in July 1951. In May 1960 the Parish of Toowoomba West was divided into the Parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes and St Anthony’s.
There has been considerable development since the land on the corner of Goodwood and Ascot Streets, on the western outskirts of Toowoomba, was purchased on behalf of the Diocese by Bishop Byrne for a school. The school, opened and blessed by Bishop Roper on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1940, was named Our Lady of Lourdes because Bishop Byrne died on her feast day in 1938. School commenced on 30th January that year and was run gratuitously for many years by the Ursuline Nuns. The Parish owes a great debt to the Ursulines who have helped form generations of our parishioners. The Ursuline badge is still worn by our children and their motto “Serviam”, Latin for “I Will Serve”, is being lived out as we volunteer our talents and services to the Parish.
The first school building was also used for Mass on Sundays until the Church, built facing Holberton St, was blessed and opened by Bishop Roper in August 1952. Father McMorrow lived in a small room under the northeast corner of the school before the presbytery was built in 1953. These buildings were financed by fundraising efforts including fetes, silver circles, jumble stalls, house parties, chocolate wheels and card parties. Two main fundraisers were the ‘Prince and Princess’ competition and the West Toowoomba Parish Catholic Debutante Ball. None of this happened without the generosity and hard work of our predecessors.
One of our longest serving groups is our St Vincent de Paul Conference, which was established in 1954 and continues to provide care for needy people in our area through the generous support of parishioners. Many of the present members are long serving, one since 1967, and they were happy to have the support of newer members and to see the formation of Mini Vinnies in the school.
Our Parish Pastoral Council was appointed in 1980 by Father Burke Since June 2000 we have been electing our Parish Council, which is responsible for coordinating the activities of Parish groups in the following areas: Prayer and Liturgy; Parish Community Building; Pastoral Care; Education and Evangelisation and Finance and Maintenance. In 2008 the Parish Pastoral Council was commissioned by Bishop Morris to be an administrative body of the Parish, as Fr Quinlan stepped down as Administrator and became priest in Residence.
Today our Parish is still composed of mainly working class families, retirees, aged persons and some business and professional people. Today we seem to have three separate Mass communities reflective of the three mass times each weekend but we try to encourage a responsible family aspect through our volunteers and with our family groups and care groups. |
