Holy Name Parish History:Early Days - Holy Name is an old, small, inner city parish. The first church/school opened in 1905, and the present building in 1921, with Fr. Cashman the first parish priest, from 1923-29. In 1929 Bishop Byrne incorporated it with St. Patrick's Parish, and only in 1951 was Holy Name a parish again, under Fr. Concannon (1951-87). At first, mainly working class families lived there, whose life and faith intertwined, typified by the flourishing of many sodalities, and the fiercely Catholic All Whites Rugby League Club, who had Holy Name as their home ground. Photos show two bus loads departing for a Legion of Mary picnic, and thousands at a Corpus Christi procession in 1968. The parish motto, "Nec Aliud Nomen" (No other name) was proudly proclaimed on banners, uniforms and letterheads. Modern Community - Fr. Keegan became parish priest in 1987, with Sr. Margaret Norris his pastoral assistant since 1993. These two servants of God, always in religious dress, have gained immense love and respect from Holy Name parishioners, and the parish is revitalised. The average age of local parishioners is greater now, but slowly, families with children are repopulating Holy Name. Eighty percent of the respondents to the parish questionnaire said they came to Holy Name because "the priest celebrates mass in a way that reminds us that it is a sacrifice of Christ". Over half the respondents live outside the parish boundaries. Many activities - e.g. Stations of the Cross, Care and Concern, St. Patrick’s Day, the fete, outdoor Christmas Carols, School liturgies and functions, St. Vincent De Paul, Mort Estate picnics, Wedding Anniversary Masses, Millennium celebrations and Legion of Mary visitations unite Holy Name with the general community. Other developments e.g. apologetics, home rosary groups, Anointing of the sick Masses, RCIA, baptism teams, sacramental programs and a modern lending library, give spiritual formation. Ritual/Culture - The Holy Name parish community observes and celebrates the many different rituals of the Sacred Liturgy of the Sacraments of Holy Mother the Church. As "The Church draws her life from the Eucharist" [EE]; so also the community of Holy Name would have no life but for the Most August Sacrifice and Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Holy Eucharist is really experienced and lived as "the source and summit" of the life of the community. The liturgical rituals of the Sacraments of the Church are truly life-giving. They are celebrated frequently; with full and active participation; and with love for the Church witnessed to by a true effort for fidelity, and an effort to appreciate and conform to the rituals prescribed by Her. Morning prayer of the Church is recited every weekday by at least twenty parishioners. This says an important thing about the Holy Name parish community: We are Catholic. We, shepherded by Bishop Morris and Pope John Paul II, conform our lives to Christ by fidelity to the Roman Catholic Faith as defined by Christ Himself through His Church. The beautiful "Commandment" stained glass windows, erected in 1993, constantly remind us of this. Symbol - Our symbol is the outdoor Calvary erected in 1992, on the West and Bridge St. corner, which all Toowoomba identifies with Holy Name. We are reminded that Christ said that daily we have to take up our cross and follow him, but that His yoke is easy and His burden light. |
