Oakey Parish History:
The parish was canonically established as part of the Archdiocese of Brisbane early in 1919. Fr Denis O' Keefe was the first Parish Priest of Oakey. At the time there were five churches and four 'Mass Centres'. The churches were: Oakey, Jondaryan, Cooyar, Peranga and Aubigny. The Mass Stations were: Bowenville, Mt Tyson, Acland and Kingsthorpe.
The first church at Oakey was erected by Fr Fouhy in 1909 down near the present football grounds. This was considered unsuitable by Archbishop Duhig so the present site was purchased. The purchase of a house owned by a Mrs Wenham was effected; the roof taken off and another story added for the accommodation of boarders. A hall was then purchased from Kingsthorpe, moved to the present grounds and became the church/school. In 1921 the Good Samaritan sisters arrived and the school opened with 109 pupils.
In 1958 the present War Memorial Church was built at a cost of £17,500 pounds and in 2008 we celebrated its 50 years with many people returning for the celebration. Our Lady of the Annunciation Church , Peranga is part of Oakey parish and our resident priest is also pastor of St Stephen's Pittsworth and St Francis de Sales, Millmerran.
