Helidon Parish History:

The foundations of the Catholic Church, Helidon were laid in 1880. Worshippers walked in regularly from Flagstone to attend church services. A new convent was opened at Helidon on 17th August, 1884. This was the first branch house of the Mercy community in Queensland. (A cyclonic hail storm hit Helidon in 1914 completely demolishing the Catholic Church and causing a new school and convent to be built (opened on 1/8/1915 and in May 1916 respectively). The Parish of Helidon was established within the archdiocese of Brisbane.

In 1942 His Grace Archbishop Duhig joined with Bishop Roper in asking the Holy See through the Apostolic Delegation to extend the boundaries of the Toowoomba diocese in an easterly direction for a few miles. This application was thereupon granted provisionally, and was finally approved by the Holy See in the year 1950.

Helidon parish includes many interesting districts with euphonious and historic names: Grantham, Flagstone, Lilydale, Carpendale, Rockmount, Postman's Ridge, Blanchview, Withcott, Murphy's Creek and Stockyard Creek. In all of these, there is great activity at the present time. Parish Activities include: Youth Group (20-25 members); Schoenstatt Mothers Group; St. Vincent de Paul Conference & Prayer Groups.
