Dalby Parish History

The first Mass celebrated in Dalby was at the home of Mr. Samuel Stewart in 1851, and the first resident Priest was Fr. McCarthy, assisted by Fr. Bovii. In 1867 a small brick Church was built on the corner of Bunya and Jimbour Streets, and in 1886 it was replaced by a wooden Church. In 1917 this Church was demolished because of white ants, and the parochial hall was used. In 1921, Monsignor T. J. Nolan instigated the erection of the Church which now stands on the corner of Bunya and Cunningham Streets. The foundation stone was laid on 14th May 1920 and the Church was dedicated on 4th December, 1921 by Archbishop Duhig. The Church was refurbished and blessed by Bishop Morris on 19th December, 1993.

St. Joseph's Parish has thrived over the years under the leadership of many dedicated Priests. There was a time when there were four resident Priests in Dalby, then until 2001 there were two, but since then, there has only been one Parish Priest to lead the communities of Dalby and District. Father Michael Cooney is the current Parish Priest. He is supported by the Parish Pastoral Council, Parish Finance Council, Parish Education Board, Parish Office workers, Country Church Committees, retired Priest Fr. Derick Furness, and Sister Anne McDonnell. We are currently in the process of establishing a Leadership Team in the Parish.

St. Joseph's Parish includes Dalby, Bell, Kaimkillenbun, Irvingdale, Bowenville and Jimbour. Masses are offered daily in Dalby as well as two weekend Masses; three Masses a month at Bell; and regular Masses at the smaller centres. Fr. Michael also celebrates Mass twice a month at Jandowae, where Sister Mary Cleary is the Pastoral Leader. There are also monthly Masses at Karingal Nursing Home and Ningana Retirement Village, and many other special Masses. The Catholic College in our Parish, Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, also has Masses and Liturgies offered on a regular basis.

The Celebration of the Sacraments is also central to our Parish life, with Reconciliation, Baptisms, Confirmations, First Holy Communions, Marriages, Funerals, Commissioning Ceremonies and Anointing of the sick and elderly, all being held regularly.

We have many groups in our Parish who are responsible for a number of initiatives within and beyond the Parish Community. These include those involved with the celebrations of Funerals, Weddings and Baptisms, Liturgy, Prayer and Spirituality, Pastoral care of the sick and elderly, establishing contact with catholic people, continuing education in faith for adults, social welfare, ecumenism, religious education in State Schools and the R.C.I.A program when needed. There is a Team Leaders Group, from each of the above groups, which meets every two months to share news, successes and challenges facing each ministry, and offer support to each other.  Other groups who contribute to life in our Parish are the Parents and Friends Association, Spring Fair Committee, Catholic Ball Committee, St. Vincent de Paul workers, St. Gerard Majellan Mothers’ Group and the Bereavement Group. In addition there are many parishioners involved in initiatives among indigenous residents, and in a wide range of cultural, sporting and broader community events and organizations.

Prayer and devotional opportunities include weekly and monthly Rosary groups in St. Joseph’s Church, in private homes and at Ningana Retirement Village, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament each Tuesday Morning and the third Wednesday Evening of each month, weekly Holy Hour, Meditation group, Prayers for the unborn and Scripture Studies.

While a lot of energy and considerable human and financial resources are devoted to maintaining a living parish community, and to the growth and effectiveness of the Catholic School from Pre-school to Year 12, our focus is very much on "the Kingdom". We deeply believe in our God-given mission to work with others in bringing about faithfulness, peace, justice, truth and joy in the "world" of Dalby & District and beyond.

Because of the shortage and ageing of Priests, many parishioners are now contributing to the life of the Parish Community, and are now involved in taking on an even more active role. We feel that the future of the Parish is definitely looking bright and positive.
