New Bishop says Farewell to Home Diocese

The newly appointed Catholic Bishop of Toowoomba Robert McGuckin has been officially farewelled from his home diocese of Parramatta in Sydney, where he has worked since 1986. He was appointed Diocesan Administrator in 1997 and since then he has been Vicar General of the Diocese and Moderator of the Diocesan Curia.

A farewell Mass was held in Parramatta’s St Patrick’s Cathedral last Saturday, (23 June). In his homily during the Mass, Bishop Anthony Fisher told the congregation that like St Paul, a “getting to know you and love you adventure” is ahead for the Bishop-elect as he is called “to adopt and be adopted by a new family, the church in Toowoomba”. He said “He is now called, as Christ and his bishops are, to love the church as a bride, giving his whole self for her.”

Following his farewell Mass, the Bishop-elect outlined his vision for the Toowoomba diocese. “It’s a mission and a vision that I have that the people of Toowoomba and myself will be one, working for the good of the church, growing in the Kingdom of God in Toowoomba” he said.

The Episcopal Ordination of Most Rev Robert McGuckin will be held in Toowoomba’s St Patrick’s Cathedral on Wednesday 11th July at 11.00am.
