The Social Justice Commission was established as one of the key directions of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan - Action for Social Justice. The Commission is grounded in Catholic Social Teaching and our current priorities are: justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, caring for the earth (environmental justice) and support and advocacy for refugees.

Operations of the Social Justice Commission:

The five key areas that the Commission works in are: spirituality, education, leadership, solidarity and research. In partnership with those affected by injustice the Commission works to analyse issues and reflectively advocate for action.

We have three staff members: Executive Officer, Education Officer and Administration. The Education Officer is supported by the Diocese and also works as part of the Education Office. The Commission meets four times a year and the Executive Officer has regular meetings with the Bishop. The Commission also has links with the Diocesan Pastoral Council and the Council of Priests.

We have a widespread reach in the community. The Education officer conducts presentations on social justice and ecology with schools and parishes throughout the Diocese. Both the Education and Executive Office have a presence in local Church and secular media outlets, they also work with other agencies and community groups. We have been involved in
the wider community with events such as NAIDOC week , the anniversary of the Apology, Close the Gap, Fair Trade Fortnight.
