Pastoral Care is the care for another given by a person of faith that embraces compassion, understanding, listening with a non-judgmental attitude and infinite respect for the faith, culture and creed of the other.

Pastoral Carers are women and men, lay and clergy, who work consultativley, cooperatively, ecumenically and beyond. All are specifically trained, mentored and supervised to provide emotional and spiritual care and support to patients, families and staff in ways that respect the individuals needs.

Operations of Pastoral Care in Health care:

We offer emotional and spiritual care and support, mainly through attentive listening to patients, their families, friends and staff in times of sickness, dying, trauma and crisis.

We recognise the dignity and worth of each person, accept the faith position of that person, and when requested facilitate visits by that person's faith representative.

Training and ongoing formation is always available. All members of the Pastoral Care Service undertake their initial training through the Ecumenical Hospital Ministry and Pastoral Care Course which is offered through Trinity College on behalf of the Brisbane College of Theology. This course is recognised by Queensland Health as an approved qualification to work in Pastoral Care.

The course is available in Toowoomba each year with the presenter coming from Brisbane each fortnight and local supervisors working with participants on the other week in each of the Toowoomba Hospitals. Parishioners living in rural areas may wish to partake in the Distant Education Pastoral Care Training Program.
