There are several canons in the Code of Canon Law which provide an outline of the role of Chancellor, the main two being Canon 482 and Canon 485. |

In this diocese, the notions of service delivery and of accountability are influenced considerably by the activities of the Heads of Church Group. For the monitoring of these activities, the Chancellor has an additional and separate role of Ecumenical Officer. Also delegated to the Chancellor is the supervision of the Diocesan Appeals Board. |

The Chancellor's role includes the compilation of an annual statistical report which is forwarded through the Apostolic Nuncio to Rome. This task is assisted by the Diocesan Financial Administrator, Tom Jolley. The Chancellor's office attracts a lot of correspondence including a great number of applications for papal blessings. |
