The Ministry of the Diocesan Archives is directed not only at the principal agents of the Church's service in its mission, but also to the wider community. As a repository, research centre and museum, the Diocesan Archives serves the wider community as a source not only of church and 'family' history, but of local and national historical sources for research. It has become a valued part of the Toowoomba historical source network.

Operations of the Diocesan Archives:

The Catholic community on the Darling Downs has records going back to the 1840s, although the Diocese of Toowoomba was not created until 1929.

The Archives are housed in the Marian Centre, built in 1987.  Some of our holdings include:

  • Historical Records: (Letters, business papers, plans, maps and other materials of most parishes, schools and religious orders.

  • Photos: and audio-visual items; over 3,000 B&W of all aspects of the Diocese besides a growing colour collection.

  • News Cuttings: 70,000 plus - covering a wide range of subjects.

  • Artifacts: from Churches and persons connected with the Darling Downs, back to the Nineteenth Century. Items include vestments, church plate, personal memorabilia.

  • Library: an extensive history research library of early twentieth Century and contemporary books, both ecclesiastical and secular.

  • Australia Catholic Directories: Almost complete set of this invaluable collection, 1919, and then 1929 to the present.

  • Toowoomba Parish Notes: (1931 - 1952) Complete set, which includes detailed donation lists for Churches, itemising streets and residents.

  • Registers: Baptismal and Marriage registers for St Patrick's Cathedral Toowoomba (1868 - 1949) and various registers for some country parishes.

  • School Year Books: Both the Catholic Schools of Toowoomba and some other denominations.

While the Archives is not a public library and there is a fee to access the available material, we do welcome visitors by appointment. The Archives is most visited by genealogists, researchers from tertiary institutes and people who wish to come and browse. Visitors are most welcome to see our displays.

For genealogical requests, most records are kept in the parish of origin (assuming the Parish is still in operation). If you know the name of the parish, please make contact with that parish directly (see the parish directory on this site). Generally, records have closed access after 1930.
